What does global citizenship look like? July 12, 2006

This is the question posed and answered, on display at Union Station through July 15th in the West Hall. Sister Cities International, Showcase of Young Artists features an art exhibit showcasing the work of over 80 pieces of original artwork by international youth. The artwork shows how young people view the world and their role within it as members of a global community.

The exhibit coincides with the Sister Cities International 50th Anniversary Conference being held in Washington, D.C. July 13-15, 2006. The conference will honor exceptional Sister City Partners and advocates for expansion of the program will lobby Capitol Hill.

The Showcase of Young Artists has encouraged youth from around the world to express the mission of Sister Cities International through artwork since 1988. After the close of the exhibit at Union Station, the artwork will travel to various Sister Cities within the United States.

Capital Fringe Festival July 11, 2006

The inaugural Capital Fringe Festival will take place July 20th through July 30th in Washington DC. The festival boasts 100 performing artists/groups who will present over 400 performances in 30 different venues in 11 days.

With this many performances to choose from you must prioritize. Tickets and passes are available for purchase online.

A quick tour of the performance offerings shows a little bit for everyone; from dance, cabaret, improv comedy, spoken word to one act plays. I am intrigued by In Pursuit of the English Rose, the Deaf Musical, One-Man Sar Wars Trilogy and Pop Up Dances to name a few.

Choose wisely!

The National Building Museum is going full speed this summer. The newest exhibit “Prairie Skyscraper: Frank Lloyd Wright’s Price Tower” opened last month, featuring more than 100 drawings, models, building components and furnishings honoring Wright’s skyscraper.

Numerous films, lectures and tours are scheduled through August. I am most excited by the building tours of local architecture and green design in action.

The construction watch tour of 1101 New York Avenue will take place July 22nd. Members will get the opportunity to see the ongoing work of this 393,000 square foot office building which is seeking Gold LEED certification. Construction is slated to be complete in December of 2006.

artDC July 5, 2006

The first annual international art fair is coming to DC in April of 2007.

The fair boasts 85 galleries showing their work along with space dedicated to film and video, unique installations and “SLICE, a section of the fair promoting a slice of the art world not normally exposed to the contemporary art market.” A series of lectures and talks will be open to the public.

Rumors have it that many local galleries such as the Phillips Collection, etc. will open their doors for free during the fair.

So far there is no posted price to visit the fair but the 27th is already dubbed “Free Friday.”

If you’re represented by a gallery, now is a good time to do a little nudging and get your stuff in.
