My September issue of dwell is here. The new issue isn’t up on their website yet but can I recommend the articles on Architecture for Humanity and transportation in America?
The Architecture for Humanity piece isn’t large but highlights projects in developing countries that are relatively low cost and provide some design along with function. A great debate is to be had here. Is design always necessary? Should aesthetics be considered in crisis situations?
The other piece is a snap-shot of a section of highway. It includes some history on how our highway system came to be and how it helped the “great white flight” from the cities. One of my favorite quotes from the piece is about how “roads are public spaces. They need to be designed for more than just cars.” As a dedicated pedestrian as of late, this really hits home.
